Carotenoids and Atopic Dermatitis
Carotenoids are known to alter the immune response. In a recent study patients suffering with atopic dermatitis were found to have significantly lower levels of carotenoids in the skin than those who did not suffer with the condition. Atopic dermatitis (eczema) is a condition that makes your skin red and itchy. It can occur at any age. The conditions is long lasting and tends to flare periodically. It may be accompanied by asthma or hay fever. There is no known cure for the condition although it is known to be associated with allergy. Carotenoid deficiency may be either a contributor to the condition or a consequence of the dermatitis.
