Does Air Pollution Cause Dementia?
We do not tend to think of air pollution as a contributor to dementia, but a recent article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences should raise some alarms. Researchers identified the abundant presence of very tiny particles of magnetite in the brains of those with dementia. This type of pollution is produced at very high temperatures as in plants that burn coal. Coal fly ash, as it is called, not only escapes from coal burning utilities, especially in India and China, but is also used in weather manipulation operations.
Coal fly ash with its magnetite particles can respond to external magnetic fields leading to the production of free radicals in the brain. The particles contain iron and aluminum and can enter the brain directly through the olfactory nerve. It is known that a compromised sense of smell often accompanies dementia. Enhanced production of free radicals is known to be a primary contributor to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's.
