 An Uncomplimentary Study of Psychiatry

Researchers in England recently evaluated five of the most important chapters in the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders) which is considered the definitive guide for the diagnosis of mental disorders by mental health professionals. The chapters evaluated were on bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, and trauma-related disorders. The researchers concluded that symptoms overlapped between diagnoses. Most troubling was that the diagnoses tell little to nothing about the individual patient and what type of treatment will be beneficial. The authors concluded that this diagnostic criteria is "a disingenuous categorical system." The system is scientifically meaningless and creates stigma and prejudice.
This study is not the first to criticize the psychiatric profession. A number of excellent books and videos are available which challenge the diagnostic criteria in psychiatry and the use of medications which often have harmful effects.
