Dry Skin and Inflammation

The skin is the largest organ in the body. Lungs, liver, and intestines weigh about 5 pounds but the skin weighs about 20 pounds. The more we age the more the skin tends to dry out so that by 45 or 50 years of age skin health declines. The protection from the outer environment declines resulting in susceptibility to breaches resulting in inflammation. Elevated inflammatory compounds in the blood are associated with increased risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, and Alzheimer's along with other inflammatory disorders.

In 2019 researchers decided to see what would happen if hydrating the skin with a skin care product would alter the blood levels of inflammatory compounds. Levels of 2 profoundly inflammatory compounds normalized and one was substantially reduced after 30 days when a skin care that hydrated the skin was applied twice a day. Three of the primary inflammatory markers for age related diseases were reduced by topical application of a hydrating skin care product to the skin.

This study directly links the use of quality skin care products that hydrate the skin to decreased inflammation in the body which should reduce the risk of inflammatory disorders.

Carotenoids and the Skin

Carotenoids are the fat soluble coloring pigments in fruits and vegetables. The carotenoids Lutein and Zeaxanthin were first recognized for their ability to protect the eyes of developing macular degeneration as we age. They sit on top of the part of the eye called the macula lutea where sunlight focuses in the process of vision and protect the underlying structures from damage.

A more recent realization on the part of nutritional science is the benefit of these very same nutrients for the skin. One recent study concluded: "...the present study indicates that the administration of lutein and zeaxanthin provides multiple benefits to the skin. In addition to the protection of the skin from the deleterious effects of UV light-inducible damage (increased free radical production) and decreased lipid peroxidation, these xanthophylls also increased the surface lipids, skin hydration, and skin elasticity." Oral supplementation with these carotenoids resulted in a four-fold increase in the ability of the skin to tolerate ultraviolet light exposure without damage to the skin.

It is best to get a balanced intake of carotenoids as a high intake of only one member of the family can inhibit the absorption of other carotenoids. NeoLife Carotenoid Complex is a patented formula which extracts carotenoids in a nitrogen environment and encapsulated them in a black capsule to their ability to help the body to cope with free radical oxygen and ultraviolet light is not lost in the manufacturing process.

Carotenoids and the Skin

I have recently been asked about sunscreen in anticipation of summer. In 2007 a randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled, multi-center study found that the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin provided a number of benefits for the skin. These supplements provided a four-fold increase in protection from UV radiation-induced damage. The carotenoids also increased surface lipids and skin hydration and elasticity. That healthy glow that carotenoids impart to the skin is accompanied by many health benefits. One of the reasons that animals like deer do not suffer from sunburn is because their diets are high in carotenoids as a result of the diets they consume.

Carotenoids not only benefit the skin, but have also been shown to reduce the risk of a number of cancers.

Skin Conditions

The following appeared in the news recently:

"Aug 11 (Reuters) - Three new conditions reported by a small number of people after vaccination with COVID-19 shots from Pfizer (PFE.N) and Moderna (MRNA.O) are being studied to assess if they may be possible side-effects, Europe's drugs regulator said on Wednesday.
Erythema multiforme, a form of allergic skin reaction; glomerulonephritis or kidney inflammation; and nephrotic syndrome, a renal disorder characterized by heavy urinary protein losses, are being studied by the safety committee of the European Medicines Agency (EMA), according to the regulator."
This news item interested me because I read it just after getting off the phone with someone who was having apparent kidney problems after being vaccinated. Very few people would make a connection between the two in spite of the fact that spike protein is known to impact circulation which is very important to kidney function.

 Carotenoids and Atopic Dermatitis

Carotenoids are known to alter the immune response. In a recent study patients suffering with atopic dermatitis were found to have significantly lower levels of carotenoids in the skin than those who did not suffer with the condition. Atopic dermatitis (eczema) is a condition that makes your skin red and itchy. It can occur at any age. The conditions is long lasting  and tends to flare periodically. It may be accompanied by asthma or hay fever. There is no known cure for the condition although it is known to be associated with allergy. Carotenoid deficiency may be either a contributor to the condition or a consequence of the dermatitis.
