Autoimmunity

                             Mercury Dental Fillings and Autoimmunity

Dental fillings placed in the teeth of mice resulted in immune abnormalities associated with autoimmunity. Other metals including gold, arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, and silver can also promote autoimmunity. It appears that chronic exposure to the metals is required for the development of autoimmune reactions. Metals may become incorporated into tissues triggering immune attack against those tissues.

Gluten and Autoimmunity

Introduction of gluten into the diet of a child in the first 3 months of life increased the risk of developing celiac disease five-fold. This is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks its own digestive tract. Gluten increases the permeability of the digestive tract leading to food intolerances and allergies.

Nutrition and Autoimmunity

Deficiency of vitamin A increased the progression of autoimmune disease in animals that provide a model for lupus. The risk of autoimmunity against the cells that produce insulin in children appears to be inversely related to intake of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 deficiencies early in childhood may increase the risk of type 1 diabetes.  Dr. Jill Norris, Ph.D., from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, believes that the vitamin supplementation for infants helps prevent beta-cell autoimmunity leading to Type 1 diabetes.
Vitamin D deficiency is a key factor involved in the development of autoimmunity. The protein in milk can mimic the vitamin D receptor, thus allergy to milk can contribute to difficulty in utilizing vitamin D.

Leading Chemicals which Disrupt Hormones

BPA: 93% of Americans have BPA in their bodies. Avoid canned foods, receipts using thermal paper, plastics with recycling #7.
Dioxins: Powerful carcinogens, hormone disruptors, and immune suppressants. Difficult to avoid. Animal products are often contaminated.
 Atrazine: Turns male frogs into females with the ability to produce viable eggs. This is an herbicide widely used on corn crops and is a common water contaminant.
 Phthalates: Sends a death-inducing signal to testicular cells. Associated with obesity, diabetes, and thyroid problems. Avoid plastics with recycling label #3.
 Perchlorate: Powerful thyroid disruptor. Supplement with iodine and purify drinking water.
 Fire Retardants: Found in foam in furniture, carpet pads. Thyroid antagonist.
 Lead: Not only a powerful toxin, but also a hormone disruptor. Avoid old paint. Filter tap water.
Arsenic: disrupts carbohydrate metabolism. Filter it out of drinking water. Found in some rice products.
 Mercury: Binds to a hormone which regulates the menstrual cycle. Avoid consuming large fish.
 Perfluorinated Chemicals (PFC's): Used in non-stick cookware and stain resistant coatings on clothing, furniture, and carpets. Resistant to degradation. Alters sex hormones and thyroid function.
Organophosphate Pesticides: Alter thyroid and testosterone function. Among the most commonly used pesticides today. Eat organic.
Glycol Ethers: Common solvents in paints, cleaning products, brake fluids and cosmetics. Shrinks the testicles of rats. Increases the risk of allergies and asthma in children.

Mercury and Brain Degeneration

    One of the most damaging of all substances to brain structure and function is mercury. It is tragic that this toxic substance it placed in decayed teeth. One study of sheep found that after placing mercury amalgam fillings in the teeth, the mercury began to accumulate in brain tissue within 24 hours. If you do not believe mercury is toxic to he brain cells view the video at the end of this section.
     Wenstrup and associates compared the brains of those with Alzheimer's and those without the disease. Most remarkable was the increase in the mercury/selenium ad mercury/zinc ratios. These two minerals are protective against mercury toxicity. An elevated ratio of mercury means that the brain has less ability to protect itself against damage from mercury. Mercury inhibits the formation of tubulin, the key structural building block of healthy neurons.
